The post that made me stop and think!

I’ve been reading A LOT of blog posts and fundraising articles in the past few months. They have been inspiring, funny, and thought provoking, to say the least. But, every once in a while, there’s a post that really makes me stop and think – AND – try to figure out how I can implement the great ideas that are discussed, within my organization.

As a result, I’ve decided to start a weekly feature: The post that made me stop and think!  I figure if it caught my attention, then it may be useful to you also.

So, the winner of the very first, The post that made me stop and think!, goes to Joe Garecht, author of The Fundraising Authority, for his post entitled, “Do Your Donors Want Your Fundraising to be More Fun?” If you aren’t already a follower of Joe’s then you should be. I’ve tweeted a number of his posts over the last several months. He has very thoughtful advice and ideas.

The title of his post captured my attention right away…… Absolutely! Donors want fundraising to be more fun! But, also (I was thinking), who doesn’t want fundraising to be more fun???

I know I often get mired down in the details, the cause, and the seriousness of fundraising, that a little fun would be a nice break. I’m sure all development directors feel that way some times.

Joe offers some really relevant thoughts to put a little fun and joy in fundraising.

First, it’s important to not only make the case for your cause, but talk about your “wins” also. Your wins are the bright side of the story. And, donors WANT to celebrate with you. I’m going to take this little bit of advice and focus on the number of professorships and chairs that has grown over the last few years. Or, the increase in the number of students being supported by scholarships. Both of these wins and many more can be incorporated in our e-newsletters, fundraising appeals, or one-on-one meetings with donors.

Second, it’s important to tell the stories of your donors, staff and volunteers. Specifically, focusing on a board member or staff member is a great way to tell a well-rounded story about all that is being done for your cause. These stories help donors understand the impact that your organization has on individuals, the community, and the world. This would be another segment in upcoming newsletters that would add interest and fun to your message.
